Queer movie recommendations from “The Authority of Lesbian Movies on TikTok,” Aria Velz

The one to watch if you’re going to watch any of this list

Filmed during the Blitz in London, the family-friendly ‘Summerland’ movie from the World War II era includes global themes. Phil believes that a lot of viewers can connect with Frank or Alice characters regardless of their sexuality because of this.

“[‘Summerland’] It really hits the longing for community and the longing to open up with yourself, while also being a very satisfying story about friendship and love,” says Phils.

Queer Classics

  • desert hearts“(1985)

Desert Hearts is as classic as you can get. The film follows a college professor who moves to Reno to get a quick divorce and ends up meeting a woman there.

  • kids watch“(1961)

“[‘The Children’s Hour’ is] sad. “It’s absolutely horrific,” says Fels. “But it’s a big, big, important piece of queer cinema history.”

  • watermelon woman“(1996)

Those with happy endings

  • Billy and Emma(2018)

“[Queer women] They want to be seen, validated, and told they can find love. I think that sometimes means for mainstream films that aren’t tightly packed, there are a lot of judgments about them,” says Phils. “And I don’t really blame them. This is not the fault of queer women. This is as wrong as an industry that hasn’t done as much work to make lesbian women feel so visible and validated.”

  • The “Fear StreetTriple (2021)

  • Imagine me and you(2005)

Save the Face was one of the first Hollywood films to focus on Chinese Americans and it “completely changed” [Velz’s] life.”

  • happiest season(2020)

Phil knows this choice is her most controversial opinion, but “she thinks ‘Happiest Season’ is a disproportionately bad movie.” She loves this movie because it depicts something she and many others went through during the holidays.

Those that highlight transgender stories

  • Alice Jr(2019)

In this Brazilian film of coming of age, a teenage YouTuber who goes to a Catholic school sets out on a journey towards her first kiss.

  • boy meets girl(2014)

  • Paris is burning“(1990)

This iconic documentary focuses on New York City’s fascinating ballroom culture and the intersectional communities in which it participates. Great watch if you’re interested in walking around or watching “Pose”.

The most unusual films

  • But I’m encouraged“(1999)

Young stars Natasha Lyonne, RuPaul and Dante Pasco (voice of Zuko from The Last Avatar) in But I’m a Cheerleader. This hilarious satirical movie is so creative that it inspired a music video for MUNA with Phoebe Bridgers.

  • A dependent lesbian space alien seeks the same(2011)

In a nutshell, the movie is one part McCarthy-era Red Scare, another part science fiction, and another part love story.

  • Jennifer’s body(2009)

Megan Fox is a “chubby double” in “Jennifer’s Body,” portraying a possessed fangirl with a thirst for flesh.

Most underrated queer movies

  • My days of mercy(2017)

This Israeli film follows a woman from a strict religious household who meets another woman at a religious school. Of all the films, “The Secrets” is one that Velz feels is the most underrated of all time.

  • women who kill(2016)

Velz strongly believes that if this movie were released today instead of six years ago, it would be a huge hit, especially for the lesbian community.

  • tell it to the bees(2018)

Movies that will make you cry

“Gia,” starring Angelina Jolie, follows the tragic life of one of the world’s first supermodels, Gia Carangi. “If you want a good cry,” says Fels, “you should watch Jia.”

  • far from heaven(2002)

  • edge of paradise(2007)

The film revolves around a Turkish man trying to find the daughter of his father’s ex-girlfriend in Istanbul. The Edge of Heaven won the Prix du Scénario at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival.

Nothing is as it seems in this Korean psychological thriller.
