Over the past 15 years, this site has gone through many transitions from namesakes (eg, WMEExperts and Windows Phone Central) to significant site redesigns.
Today is another of those days. Although we’re not changing the name, fortunately, you may have noticed this morning that the site has a completely new look. The design is in line with other websites owned by Future PLC (our parent company) and is also more optimized for web and mobile traffic.
Of course, like any transition, there are bumps and problems along the way during the migration process. We’re working on these fixes behind the scenes over the coming weeks, including a fix for layout quirks (both on PC and mobile).
To sum up better in tl:dr way questions you might have about the redesign.
Why redesign the site?
In short, the old site (including the backend editor) was too old to keep up with emerging web technologies. In addition, all Future PLC-owned sites will be on the same platform to ensure service and compliance needs and make management easier. Heck, we now have a live blogging system when we start doing live events again!
The new site seems boring.
We’re sorry you feel this way. Hopefully, a cleaner, more streamlined look (including faster load times, especially on mobile) will outweigh a custom site and design. We’ll continue to pressure our masters for more customization and design options in the coming months.
Will there be a dark situation?
Unfortunately no. This feature is something Windows Central employees want, but it doesn’t look like it’s going to happen.
The good news is that you can use a browser extension like Dark Reader or Night Eye to force it (sounds cool!). Our advice: If you are using a Dark Reader, under the list of sites, choose to use “Invert Listed Only”, and add windowscentral.com so that our site works only in forced dark mode.
Good question! We do not dispose of comments. In fact, we have finally moved to the popular Disqus system after many years of people asking for it. However, it will take a few more weeks to migrate it, but it is a top priority for the web team, so wait! You can always argue with me on Twitter If you love.
Do you have a spat we can use instead?
yes! We have a very active Discord channel with over 2000 members, with hundreds online at any time. Share and talk about Windows, Surface, Xbox rumors, and more, including all the news today.
Do I need more? You can also join the weekly live podcast every Friday at 1:30 PM ET on our YouTube channel.
I hate ads!
Yes, we all do! Website ads are rarely fun, and unfortunately our site is no different for many. While we do our best to balance the look of the site with the need to pay our employees, it rarely works in a way that satisfies everyone (which is also something we rarely have direct control over).
Of course, there are “solutions” that we cannot publicly agree to, but we also understand the reality of the web today and the desires of users. If you hide our ads, we ask you to click our links the next time you buy a game or laptop, as this commission helps us offset the loss of advertising revenue.
What happened to the Android and Windows apps for the site?
Unfortunately, these apps are no longer supported or working and have been pulled from their respective stores. Mobile apps for websites aren’t a trend anymore, and it’s hard to justify app maintenance costs (vs returns). While we were very proud of our old apps (especially those for Windows Phone), it was time to move on.
Of course, you can pin our App to the taskbar, Start or desktop by installing our site as a PWA in Android or Windows with Edge. It’s a very similar experience and looks great too.
We hope this answers some of your most important questions regarding Windows Central. We appreciate your bearing with us while we go through this process, and we always listen to your feedback. The team worked hard on this transition and was under a lot of pressure as we have to learn a whole new system too, so thank you for your patience!
