Sorry Apple, but Fortnite is back on iPhone and iPad

After Fortnite developer Epic Games took on giant Apple by trying to circumvent its in-app purchase system in 2020, the hugely popular game was taken off the App Store – much to the chagrin of mobile gamers around the world.

An epic lawsuit ensued, a pun intended, and after months of courtroom chatter, Apple came out largely winning. This meant that Apple had no obligation to allow Fornite to return to the App Store, and it did not.

While many assumed that was the end of it, Nvidia and Epic Games had other plans in store, and today is the day Fortnite officially returns to the iPhone and iPad.

Well, maybe it’s not official, as you can’t go to the App Store and download the app.

Alternatively, you can play Fortnite using Nvidia’s cloud-based game streaming service, GeForce Now, which can be accessed via the Safari browser on all iPhone and iPad devices.

Premium subscriptions are available, but there’s also a free tier that lets you play a variety of your favorite PC games for free for up to an hour at a time, so there’s no need to pay for access.

You might be right in pointing out that Fortnite has been available on GeForce Now – and competing apps like Xbox Cloud Gaming – for quite some time. However, what makes this different is that it is a mobile optimized version of the game complete with full touch screen controls, just like it used to be.

Essentially, today’s release brings Fortnite as close to the original iOS experience as the iPhone and iPad players experience. It’s equally responsive too, thanks to a combination of Nvidia’s impressive low-latency cloud technology, direct collaboration with Epic Games, and of course an extensive beta testing period that saw more than 500,000 participants join in the fun.

I’ve been trying out this touch version of Fortnite for the past few days and have been impressed by how fluid the experience feels. The touchscreen controls are responsive, the in-game menus are easy to navigate, and of course, the gameplay is just as exhilarating as ever.

It’s also the little details, like the gameplay extending to the edges of the screen (something not found in cloud-based games) that complete the experience. It really looks like it works locally on your phone – as long as you have a fast enough internet connection.

It should be noted that while this is exciting for iOS gamers, the touch screen functionality is coming to Android devices at the same time.

There are benefits to Fortnite over GeForce Now other than touchscreen connectivity, especially when it comes to updates. While most users will have to sit around and wait for an update to download and install when a new season launches, Nvidia takes care of this remotely, which means you can always have instant access to the game without a long wait for updates to install.

In addition to the aforementioned free tier, GeForce Now offers the Priority level and the RTX 3080. The £8.99 / $9.99 per month Priority tier gives you, as the name suggests, priority access during busy periods along with the power of the RTX 20 series, while the The top-of-the-line RTX 3080 at £17.99 / $19.99 per month by Nvidia’s latest 30-series GPUs.

It’s cutting edge gameplay at the PC level, on practically any smartphone, tablet or PC.

A higher subscription also gets additional benefits such as [email protected] Stream on PC, and play at 120fps – including Fortnite – on supported Android smartphones. Let’s just hope that the high-frame gameplay makes the transition to iOS sooner rather than later.
