In the family drama “Cassiopeia,” Seo Hyun-jin plays Soo-jin, a self-made lawyer in her thirties who raises her daughter Ji-na alone. Soo Jin asks her widowed father, In-Woo (Ahn Sung Ki), to pick up her daughter from the “Hajun”, or private academy, and take care of her until she returns home.

One day, she attacked him angrily, saying: “Where did you take my daughter?” Only to find out moments later that her daughter is already home. She apologizes, smiles and after a long pause says she is “confused”.

Soo Jin sends her daughter to her ex-husband in the United States, but soon after, she calls In-woo to say, “Hurry up, Dad! We’re late for Ji-na’s flight.” After being in a car accident, she was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s disease.

The film vividly depicts Soo Jin’s struggle to stay in touch with her family and herself as the disease progresses rapidly over a period of a few months. Focuses on Soo Jin’s decline and how the disease affects her relationships.

Seo said she cried while reading the script two years ago. “At first, I didn’t imagine it would be so difficult to play the role,” she said during a recent press conference for the film. “I just wanted the role so badly.”

“After reading the first table, I realized I was very brave. When we started shooting, I thought, ‘What the hell made me do this?'” I was so ignorant. I called the manager and told him about my concerns, so he cried. He consoled me by saying, ‘Think of it as if we were on a fun ride together.’

The film also gives a window into the lives of Alzheimer’s patients and embraces the value of family and life. Soo Jin and In-Woo, who used to live separately, find ways to connect with each other and create stronger bonds.

Director Shin Yoon Shik said he wanted to focus on the father-daughter dynamics. “I wanted to focus on portraying the father who couldn’t be there for his daughter when she was growing up, but finally got a chance to spend time with her when she was older,” he said.

Ahn skillfully portrays In-woo, Soo Jin’s supportive and caring father. At all times, he remains patient with his daughter and promises to never abandon her.

But the star of the movie is Seo who gave an unforgettable performance. The public sees her evolution from a confident lawyer to a mother who has become completely disoriented. You become unable to do the simplest things, like take a shower or look for familiar places.

“Cassiopeia” will be shown in local theaters on June 1.
