Apple CEO Tim Cook met this week with Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh at the Apple Park campus in Cupertino, California, where the two discussed trade, investment and finance.

According to a Vietnamese news site, SGGP (via Me more), Chen said the Vietnamese government wants to create a “fair, transparent and market-based business environment” to enable US companies and investors to make gains in Vietnam.

Vietnam has 31 companies employing 160,000 workers who produce and assemble electronic parts and equipment for Apple products, and Chinh asked Cook to ramp up Apple’s business activities in Vietnam.

Cook, in turn, thanked Vietnam for creating a “conducive business environment for Apple’s operations,” and told Chinh that Apple really wanted to expand its supply chain in the country.

Over the past two years, reports have indicated that Apple is shifting more of its production to countries such as Vietnam and India in order to diversify its supply chain and manufacture more products outside of China. Apple has started aggregating some AirPods Pro, iPads, and HomePod mini in Vietnam.

Apple supplier Foxconn was granted a license in January 2021 to set up a $270 million factory in Vietnam after Apple asked the company to move some iPad and MacBook assemblies from China to Vietnam.
