Trimble RTX technology enables better location capabilities on Android smartphones | Geographical week news

The new feature targets highway, suburban and low-rise city driving environments where GNSS positioning is a challenge.

Trimble And Qualcomm Technologiesannounce availability Trimble RTX GNSS Technology For Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 and Snapdragon 888 mobile platforms. This technology enables superior location capabilities in premium Android smartphones all over the world. Integrating Trimble RTX GNSS technology, a correction services platform, with Snapdragon contributes to higher quality and more accurate location-based user experiences — such as in-vehicle navigation with lane-level guidance.

Improve website accuracy

Pairing Trimble RTX technology with premium Snapdragon Mobile platforms enhances the GPS capabilities of Android phones. This will enable smartphone manufacturers, service providers, and application developers that use Snapdragon to provide mobile users with high meter-level accuracy (or about 3 feet) when used with the Trimble RTX patch service. This represents a 5-fold improvement in location accuracy over the typical accuracy available today.

John Sprivulis (Trimble) states that it is planned to distribute the Trimble RTX feature that enables precise positioning of Android smartphones in partnership with Android smartphone manufacturers, on their selected smartphone models. Trimble and Qualcomm will work alongside Android smartphone manufacturers to enable the capability on these selected phone models.

The new feature performs better in open sky environments, especially in the USA, southern Canada and Europe. There may be some local environmental factors, such as signal interference or signal path blockage, that can affect the GNSS-derived sites/sites. These local effects can affect signal availability.

Path-level accuracy for real-time navigation

The accuracy of location information can greatly improve the smartphone user experience when using Maps, Driving or other mobile applications. For example, with the exact location of a ride-sharing app, both driver and passenger can have a better experience when the destination is more accurately displayed. In addition, lane-level accuracy allows drivers to get greater map details and more accurate directions when using real-time navigation apps.

Accurate positioning will enhance the success rate of shared transportation vehicles, especially in crowded public transportation sites such as airports, sports stadiums, entertainment venues, etc. Precise positioning on a smartphone is expected to reduce the amount of delayed or incomplete transfers due to customers not being able to accurately locate or identify their flight.

John Sprifolis: “The target use case is highway, suburban, and low-altitude city driving environments. Mega urban skyscrapers make accurate GNSS positioning difficult, which is why cell phones benefit from additional sensors and map matching along with data GNSS. Non-automotive use cases could include things like field augmented and expanded reality (AR/XR) applications, gaming and geocaching applications, location-based marketing and advertising, etc.”

This new collaboration expands Trimble’s existing relationship with Qualcomm Technologies to provide high-accuracy GPS solutions for connected vehicles, advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), and autonomous driving solutions to vehicle OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers. Trimble RTX technology is expected to be in Snapdragon 8 mobile platforms. The Snapdragon 888 will be available in the second quarter of 2022.
