Revisiting Kamal Hassan’s 1986 movie Vikram: A movie ahead of its time

With Kamal’s highly anticipated Vikram, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj slated for release in a few weeks, the author is reminiscent of the expectations and hype that surrounded the release of the star’s 1986 “original” movie of the same name.

There may not be frantic requests for daily “updates” on social media like the kind we’ve seen Valmay But in terms of expectations of the prospective audience, Kamal Hassan Vikram Not far behind. There are multiple reasons for this. Far from the obvious reason why he’s a star perfect, teaming up with young and sexy director Lokesh Kanagaraj is something else. Another team also includes prominent artists such as Fahadh Faasil and Vijay Sethupathi. Since it was the title of the project Vikram, Another movie name of “Kamal” appeared on the big screens in the summer of 1986, the plot increased.

Just like the promotions for the new Vikram I promised, the original Vikram It was also a full-fledged action movie and the first production project for Kamal’s own company – Raaj Kamal Films International. It was Kamal’s first production Raja Parvai (1981) but that was under the banner of the Hassan Brothers. For ease of reference and understanding, I call the 1986 movie Vikram 1.0.2 Update And the next movie Vikram 2.0.2 Update in this piece. With the theatrical release only a few weeks away, the hype Vikram 2.0.2 Update Created is tangible. Given all the excitement, I couldn’t help turning back 36 years Vikram 1.0.2 Update issued.

much earlier Vikram 1.0.2 Update It was released in theaters, and its story was published as a series (Thaodar Cathay) in popular Tamil weekly magazine Kumodam. In the pre-social media days, this was a way of creating expectations about a big movie before it was released. Usually, in this format, the story lasts a few weeks and stops abruptly somewhere at the fourth point with this exasperating statement – “Meedhi viraivil velli thiraiyil kaanga” (Watch the rest soon on the silver screen)! I even remember the super movie K Bhagyaraj in 1981 Mona Getngal I followed this path.

The Vikram The series, written by expert writer Sujatha, followed the same technique, and I must say it really worked. It was a time when Sujatha was very popular. Filmmakers would turn to his serialized stories to adapt them for the big screen. But I doubt it Vikram It was his first effort to write a story for a movie. I’m not surprised that Kamal, who always enjoys collaborating with talented writers, worked with Sujatha on this film, which launched the latter’s active writing roles in films.

quite, Vikram 1.0.2 Update It was a new attempt in Tamil cinema. Reports say it was the first Tamil film to use Steadicam a few years after it was hired in Hollywood. Kamal in the foreground, writer Sjatha behind the screenplay and music of Iliaraja, who was also at the height of his career at the time, were enough to set off unprecedented expectations for the film at the time. I should add here that the song title is “Vikram, Vikram…”, which incidentally also appears Vikram 2.0.2 UpdateHe used the computer-modified voice along with Kamal as the lead vocalist and was a huge hit prior to the release itself.

I vividly remember that when a group of us, ardent lovers of Kamal’s works, went to watch Vikram 1.0.2 Update In the theater, we were stunned by what we saw in the first few minutes. Right from the opening credits, in which Kamal does a solo break dance sequence in silhouette, to the very close-up opening shot of a rain-soaked dove perched on a gate on a cloudy day, we knew we were into something different in the terms of filmmaking in Tamil cinema. The film was directed by the late Rajashkar, who built a reputation as a maker of good masala films like Thambikku Entha OoruAnd Badikadavan And cake satay right before this.

Unfortunately, our enthusiasm did not last long. The movie soon started falling apart. The story, which was about that intelligence detective Arun Kumar Vikram (played by Kamal, obviously) on a mission to save the country from a missile attack, has gone viral. Considering the cast which included Amjad Khan – Bollywood’s biggest hero at the time, the very charming Dimple Kapadia, Satyraj as the main villain, Janakaraj, Malayalam actor Lacey, apart from Kamal himself, does anyone have any doubts that Kamal was making a movie awesome. The movie “All India” at the same time? But the script as it was presented went over the head of movie viewers even in Tamil Nadu. The result – the film had a particularly good opening but panned by critics and audiences alike. Although it could have done well commercially, it cannot be counted among Kamal’s best films.

I am sure that when Kemal and Sujata thought about the movie, they wanted to make the first and one of the best sci-fi/crime/espionage films in Tamil in the Bond movie genre. Describing Vikram as an unemotional spy who has several girls he craves while exhibiting a “don’t care” attitude is a straight out page from the Bond series. Not to mention the action overloads, the chase sequences, and the plethora of weapons on offer. But somewhere from paper to screen, the movie got lost in translation.

What let the movie down were three things, in my opinion. First, the script. While the hunt for a stolen missile takes place in India, the film tours a medieval desert kingdom called Salamiyah, where people speak the language of pacifism. Even for 1986, Raja and Rani’s break was a yawn. By the time the story returns to the original theme of hijacking missiles, the audience’s interest had already been lost. Second, make. In the absence of the sound effects/sound effects tools and technology aids that we have today, the industry has left much to be desired. The director himself was new to the genre and perhaps overwhelmed with the task at hand. Years later, Kamal saw that he wished Vikram 1.0.2 Update It was directed by Mani Ratnam, who felt it would have done more justice to the subject. Third, the subject itself may have been ahead of its time. Now this is not the first time that Kamal’s film has suffered from this meaning. for him Aalavandhan, Anbe Sivam, Uttama Villain, which did not do well at the box office, all had the same problem.

I felt years later when Kamal wrote and directed Vishwaropam (1 and 2)It was a kind of atonement Vikram 1.0.2 Update! Vishwaropam It’s also an interesting spy story in the Bond mold where Kamal, in my opinion, has fixed all the issues we’ve seen in it Vikram 1.0.2 Update. There are many obvious similarities, such as the theme (an intelligence agent on a mission to save the world), two women coming to help Kamal, a story that spans many continents, Afghanistan rather than peaceful, and if the Vikram 1.0.2 Update The climax of having computer expert Lissy help change the direction of the missile, in Vishwaropam It’s Pooja Kumar as an oncologist who uses Faraday’s shield to deploy a cesium bomb. And not to forget the opening shot of the bathroom in both films. With much better screenplay, superior craftsmanship and filmmaking, VishwaropamAnd especially the first part, it can be counted among the top 10 of Kamal films.

Going back to the present, what is he doing Vikram 2.0.2 Update hold us? One hopes it’s Lokesh Kanakaraj Vikram It “explodes” on the big screen, “shoots” all cylinders and “all guns are on fire” among Kamal’s best films. The film is scheduled to be released worldwide in theaters on June 3.
