Use the steps here to install Ubuntu 22.04 LTS Jammy JellyFish Linux on Windows 10 or 11 using a Hyper-V virtual machine.
Windows 11 and 10 come with a feature called “Hyper-V“To run virtual machines. Thus, we don’t require any third-party tool like VirtualBox or Vmware player. Well, when it comes to trying Linux like Ubuntu we already have WSL on Windows. However, this is more on the command line and cannot give us the experience we get. From fully installed Ubuntu Desktop.
Hyper-V is a Type 1 virtualization technology, so after you enable it on Windows 10 or 11, you won’t be able to use VirtualBox or VMware Player at least not the full potential of Type 2 virtualization technologies.
Steps to install Ubuntu 22.04 on Windows 11 or 10 using Hyper-V
The steps here to setup Ubuntu 22.04 Linux on Hyper-V are not limited to this version only. You can follow this tutorial for other previous versions like Ubuntu 20.04 or 18.04 including Linux like Debian, Linux Mint, POP_OS and more…
1. Enable virtualization in BIOS
To run Hyper-V, we need to enable virtualization in BIOS, if you are using VirtualBox or VMwarePlayer, then go to the next step. If it is not enabled, restart the system and open the BIOS immediately by pressing the F1, F2, F10, F12 or Del keys, it depends on the model of the motherboard you are using.
Once you have the BIOS, find out the CPU or advanced settings and enable virtualization.
2. Enable Hyper-V feature in Windows 1o or 11
It doesn’t matter if you’re using Windows 11 or 10, the steps to activate Hyper-V will be the same.
• Click on search icon or ribbon, on the taskbar.
• searching for “Turn Windows features on or off.
• As its icon appears, click to open it.
• Scroll down and search for “Hyper-V” to choose.
• Check it out and tap yes button.
Soon it will ask you to order Restart to finish the process.
3. Download Ubuntu 22.04 ISO
If you already have an Ubuntu 22.04 ISO image, you can go to the next step otherwise visit File Ubuntu official website and download the ISO file of Jammy JellyFish Linux.
4. Create an Ubuntu 22.04 Virtual Machine on Hyper-V
Go to the Windows search box and type – hyper-v And its icon appears to click, open “Hyper-v Manager”.
Now, select your System name There on Hyper-V manager then click ona job“To determine”new“and then”virtual machine“.
5. Specify the name and location of the virtual machine
Give a name to your virtual machine, here we use “Ubuntu 22.04” you can customize whatever you want. Apart from that, you can also change the location to store files generated by Hyper-v for virtual machines. This helps us save some C drive space.
Next, let the default version 1 be selected and press File next one button.
6. Set Memory for Ubuntu 22.04 VM
Set the amount of RAM you want to allocate to your Ubuntu 22.04 virtual machine. If you are planning to install a full graphic desktop for this Linux, go with 4GB RAM for optimal performance.
7. Network configuration
To get the network connection in the created virtual machine we have to set a virtual network switch. So, from the drop-down box, select – default switch.
8. Create a virtual hard disk
To install Ubuntu 22.04 LTS on Windows 11 or 10 Hyper-v, we need storage space, so let’s create a virtual hard disk.
Enter the amount of space you want to allocate to the virtual disk. Choose at least 60GB or more as per your requirements. After that press next one button.
9. Set the Ubuntu 22.04 ISO File to Hyper-V VM
Now, to install the operating system, we need a source file which is an Ubuntu 22.04 ISO file in our case. Select the optionInstall an operating system from a bootable CD/DVD-ROM“and then”image file (.iso)Then click browse Button to navigate to the Ubuntu 22.04 ISO file to select it. Once done, click onnext oneThen file finish button.
10. Run Ubuntu 22.04 VM on Windows Hyper-v
After following all the above steps, you will have your Ubuntu virtual machine on your Hyper-V interface. Right click on that and select “Connection” to choose.
You will connect to the virtual machine, there, press the button “StartedTo perform a Ubuntu 22.04 router installation.
