Apple is already testing iPhones with USB-C ports instead of Lightning ports, according to BloombergMark Gorman. Apple doesn’t plan to switch from Lightning to USB-C until 2023 at the earliest, as this year’s iPhones continue to offer a Lightning port.

We first heard about a potential swap to USB-C from Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who said earlier this week that Apple plans to ditch the Lightning port in favor of a USB-C port in 2023 iPhone 15 models.

There have been countless rumors about Apple using USB-C ports over the years, especially after Apple started using USB-C for the iPad range, but until now, Apple has stuck with Lightning for ‌iPhone‌‌.

Apple may be planning a swap due to legal requirements that can be implemented in Europe. The European Union is working on legislation that would require Apple to use USB-C technology across its range of products, on iPhones, iPads and AirPods.

All devices sold in Europe will need a universal USB-C port if the legislation is passed, so Apple will need to ship special USB-C ‌iPhone‌ models in Europe or simply switch to Lightning worldwide.

USB-C ports will allow for faster charging speeds and faster data transfers, plus it will make iPhone‌ compatible with Mac and iPad‌ models that already use USB-C.

If Apple moves to USB-C, Gurman says the company will come out with an adapter that allows the USB-C iPhone to connect to accessories that have Lightning ports.
