Digital luxury will be able to dim the background of Android 13

The latest Digital Wellbeing feature that will soon be available on Android 13 devices is the ability of a sleep time mode to dim your wallpaper.

About APK Insight: In this “APK Insight” post, we have unpacked the latest version of an app that Google has uploaded to the Play Store. When we decompile these files (called APK files, in the case of Android apps), we can see different lines of code within this hint in possible future features. Keep in mind that Google may or may not ship these features, and our interpretation of what they are may be incomplete. We’ll try to enable those who are about to finish, however, to show you what they would look like if they did charge. With that in mind, keep reading.

Bedtime mode: dark theme and blackout background

On Android today, Google has introduced a whole host of features to help discourage using your phone at night, or at least reduce eye strain at night. With Bedtime Mode, a large part of Google’s Digital Wellbeing suite, you can actually use a schedule to put your phone in grayscale, disable Always-On Display, and activate Do Not Disturb.

In Android 13, we’ve found that Google is working on the ability to darken your phone’s background. This capability was briefly rolled out in an Android code change that we discovered a few months ago before it was removed, and our own Dylan Roussel was able to enable it on an Android 13 Beta device. Below, you’ll see some examples of wallpaper that have been dimmed, ranging from 0% (disabled) to 100% (all black).

With the latest Digital Wellbeing beta update, we find our first pointers on how to use the wallpaper dimming effect in Android 13.

Blackout wallpaper

More specifically, wallpaper dimming will come as an optional new feature of Digital Wellbeing’s Sleep Mode as one of the many ways to dim your screen at night to be easier on the eyes. At this time, we are not sure what percentage of the Android 13 wallpaper will be dimmed.

In an alternate piece of in-app text likely to be displayed on devices not yet running Android 13, we’ve learned that sleep time mode will also be able to make your device “use a dark background”. Based on another piece of text, this only appears to indicate that Android’s built-in dark mode is turned on.

Update 5/10: Dylan Roussel was able to provide a preview of these new features of Sleep Mode in Digital Wellbeing in action. As bedtime mode gains a wider range of options, the app is updated to de-clutter the main settings page by giving bedtime mode its own page.

Here you will find a full suite of bedtime mode features including automatic dark mode and Android 13 background dimming. With a bit of testing, we found that the wallpaper is dimmer by 60% when the sleep time mode is active.

As of today, while Android offers ways to schedule dark themes based on sunset and sunrise — and we’ve seen signs of bedtime-based scheduling in Android 13 — these new bedtime mode options don’t seem to be available on our devices. Running Android 13 Beta.
