It’s time for Apple to rethink these premium products

Amid all the other updates in the last year, Apple forgot some products in its portfolio. Here are five things we think Apple should show some love for.

Some of these devices, such as AirPort routers, are no longer available, and others are still available. While some products we love, others have glaring missteps that Apple hasn’t tackled yet.

Magic Mouse

If we want to get technical, Apple Act He recently updated Magic Mouse. With Mac Studio, Apple introduced a new color method that combines a black plastic top surface with a metallic silver bottom.

This update does not address Apple’s ridiculous lower-charging design for the Magic Mouse. This prevents the mouse from being used while charging.

It only takes about 15 minutes of charging to get hours of use, but that doesn’t excuse this poor design choice. It’s long overdue for Apple to redesign the Magic Mouse with an improved charging system.

lightning cables

Apple’s embarrassingly bad Lightning cable needs repair. A quick Google search will reveal the range of user complaints regarding this simple white power cable.

We’re not even talking about the sadly slow data it backs up, it just cracks very easily. This is even more true if the cable has been handled by careless – or children.

Unusually, Apple seems to know there is a problem. I’ve recently started bundling improved cables – but only on specific products.

New Color Matching Nylon Cable for iMac 24″

The 24-inch iMac has a color-matched, nylon-wrapped cable in the box. For the Mac Pro, there’s a nicer cable with a sturdier gauge wire.

It’s all well and good but it doesn’t address the trash cable that comes with its most popular products – like iPhones and AirPods. These cables are abused daily and must be replaced most often.

It seems like Apple only got cheap when it decided to omit a better cable in the box for these mass-market products.

ipod touch

Apple hasn’t updated the iPod Touch since 2019. At that point, Apple hadn’t introduced its latest cool technology to future-proof hardware. Instead, it stuck in an old A10 Fusion processor and kept an 8-megapixel camera system.

Outside of enterprise uses, we understand that iPod Touch is not very popular these days. The device is so old that we don’t know how long it will receive software updates.

You can envision buying an iPod Touch in 2022 and stop getting new versions of iOS once the fall. While Apple has been doing its best to support mobile chipsets for years, in the end it can’t keep older chipsets supported indefinitely.

At $199 for the base iPod model with 32GB of storage, the iPhone SE is just over $400 and comes with 64GB to start. The iPhone SE also has the latest A15 Bionic processor, and a 12MP camera, among other improvements.

Wi-Fi routers

Apple has sold wireless routers for nearly 20 years, starting in 1999, and not stopping until 2018. With much of the market moving into networking solutions, Apple jumped in, ceding market share to third parties.

Apple routers have been loved for their ease of setup and tight integration with their products and services. You can access your Mac desktop remotely while you’re away from your home without any additional software, you can backup your Time Capsule to your network with one click, and it worked great.

Apple AirPort Extreme

We’d love it if Apple got back into this market and brought back some of the first-party support we crave. Especially as privacy is becoming increasingly important to users and the smart home market continues to expand.

Currently, there are only two HomeKit-enabled routers on the market – and Apple didn’t make them. An Apple-branded router native to HomeKit would be welcome.

It may be a long opportunity for Apple to develop a new product category when it is so busy with its other product lines. But this will not stop us from hope.

Apple Watch Series 3

We don’t know why Apple continues to sell the Apple Watch Series 3, given the Apple Watch SE’s sheer cost and superiority. This smartwatch debuted in 2017 – five years ago at this point.

This watch is powered by Apple S3 SiP. This is quite old compared to the Apple Watch Series 7 which features Apple’s S7 SiP. Lately, there’s been no speed bump with the new Apple Watch, but the S3 to S7 is great.

Users are already complaining about watchOS 8’s slowdown in Series 3. New features that watchOS 9 will introduce later this year will only make matters worse.

You can often find an Apple Watch Series 3 for about $150 but that no longer means it’s a good buy. Apple needs to leave this one.
