Apple today released a new 4E71 firmware update for AirPods 2, AirPods Max, and AirPods Pro, compared to the 4C165 firmware released in December. Apple also released a new 4E71 firmware for AirPods 3, up from the 4C170 firmware released in January.

Apple doesn’t provide information about what’s included in updated firmware updates for AirPods‌, so we don’t know what improvements or bug fixes the new firmware brings.

There is no standard way to upgrade AirPods, but firmware is generally installed over the air while AirPods are connected to an iOS device. Putting the AirPods in the case, plugging the AirPods into a power source, then pairing the AirPods to your iPhone or iPad should force the update after a short period of time.

You can check the “AirPods” or “AirPods Pro” firmware by following these steps:

  • Connect your ‌AirPods or ‌‌AirPods Pro‌‌‌‌‌ to your iOS device.
  • Open the Settings app.
  • Click General.
  • Click on About.
  • Click on “AirPods”.
  • Look at the number next to “Firmware Version”.

If we find noticeable changes after installing firmware updates, we’ll share the details, but the software will likely include performance improvements and bug fixes.
