Apple is still working on a new HomePod product that combines a speaker with the functionality of an Apple TV and a FaceTime camera, according to Trust Bloomberg Journalist Mark Gorman.

In the Q&A section of his recent Power On newsletter, Gurman said he “absolutely” believes that “a new HomePod is coming and likely to be “at the heart of Apple’s approach to the home.”

Q: Do you think a new HomePod or a home device is still coming?
A: I definitely think a new HomePod is coming — specifically, a device that combines a HomePod, an Apple TV, and a FaceTime camera. I don’t think a large standalone HomePod is still in development, but perhaps a new HomePod mini is coming. In any case, the composite product is likely to be at the heart of Apple’s approach, with HomePod minis flanked throughout the house.

Gurman first suggested last year that Apple was working on an “Apple TV” integrated with a HomePod ‌ speaker that contained a camera for video calls through a connected TV. In April 2021, Gorman said that the device’s other capabilities would include standard Apple TV box functions such as watching video and gaming as well as smart speaker uses such as playing music and using Apple’s digital Siri assistant.

At the time of the original report, it was said that the product was in its early stages, and that Apple could choose not to launch the product or change key features. However, based on Gurman’s latest reading of the situation, Apple’s original plans remain firm.

Apple discontinued its original HomePod‌ in March 2021, leaving many wondering if the company was working on a successor. The HomePod mini, a smaller version of the HomePod ‌ launched in 2020, has been more popular thanks to its lower price, so it wouldn’t be surprising if Apple eventually launched another HomePod mini‌ with new features, Gorman suggests. But what the device that combines the HomePod camera, Apple TV and FaceTime will look like is still unclear.
