A few weeks ago, Apple announced the production version of Apple Business Essentials. In Apple’s newsroom post, there was a small mention of something that somewhat broke ground in the enterprise world. I think this means that Apple has a solid understanding of what organizations need to succeed with Apple in business.

Employees simply sign in to their work account on their iPhone, iPad, or Mac with a Managed Apple ID. Once signed in, they will have access to everything they need to be productive, including the new Apple Business Essentials app, where they can download the business apps available to them. Managed Apple IDs can be created by federating with Microsoft Azure Active Directory, which is coming later this spring with Google Workspace identity services, allowing employees to log into their devices with a single work username and password. Apple Business Essentials works with company-provided and personally owned devices, and with Apple’s User Enrollment feature, employee personal information remains private and encrypted separate from business data.

When I was reading the statement, I almost missed this mention the first time around. I’ve become so accustomed to reading about Google Workspace that it just doesn’t register in my mind. As part of this release, Apple is publicly committing to integrating Google Workspace into Managed Apple IDs. Since the release of Apple Business Manager and Managed Apple IDs, I’ve been asking for this functionality. Google Workspace is an industry counterpart to Microsoft’s cloud services. Organizations fall into one of two camps: Google or Microsoft. If you use Microsoft 365, Azure AD, etc. – I’ve enjoyed easily creating and managing Apple IDs for a few years now.

What does this mean for Apple in the workplace?

For organizations that have relied on Google Workspace as their cloud identity management solution, Managed Apple IDs have been a manual process, and have been a hindrance to many organizations using Managed Apple IDs. With this announcement, Apple will make it easier for organizations with Google to use their Managed Apple IDs. Google and Apple have had their fair share of problems over the years, but I think Apple made this decision for one reason: It makes an Apple Business Essentials subscription more attractive to all businesses.

It doesn’t look like Apple has plans to roll out a competitor to Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 anytime soon, so it makes sense to enable IT departments to easily integrate their chosen identity system into Apple Business Manager. I think what this indicates is that Apple is taking an “Apple approach” to managing enterprise identity. This approach means that Apple understands that Microsoft and Google are closely integrated into every business in the world. Apple wants it to be a secondary subscription. Managed Apple IDs make it simpler to use Apple devices for work.

I’ve always thought that Apple would come up with a competitor to Google Workspace and Microsoft 365, but I don’t think that’s true now. Apple’s goal is still to increase services revenue, but it’s not about hosting email and calendar in the enterprise. Apple has created a new category of services aimed at increasing service revenue. More organizations are likely to say yes To Apple Business Essentials with integration in Google Workspace. iCloud storage is excellent, but the top reasons to subscribe are device repair and 24/7/365 support. For mixed business organizations, Apple’s business essentials can be frontline IT support, handling hardware repairs, and making it easy to secure all of their Apple devices.

With Apple Business Essentials, Apple doesn’t try to compete against people like Jamf, Kandji, or Mosyle. These MDM vendors use the same APIs that Apple uses to manage its devices. The enemy of Apple Business Essentials is the enterprise’s unmanaged devices. With this new business proposition, Apple says: We want to help all businesses secure and manage their Mac and iOS devices, so we’ll make it easy to connect with any identity management system you have. Google Workspace integration makes this possible for thousands of companies that haven’t thought about Apple Business essentials before.
