In celebration of Star Wars Day, Apple today shared “Behind the Mac” featuring Skywalker Sound, Lucasfilm’s sound effects division known for films like Star Wars and Indiana Jones.

The Skywalker Sound uses 130 racks of Mac Pro, 50 iMac, 50 MacBook Pro, and 50 Mac mini computers running Pro Tools, all connected remotely to a central machine room. The studio also uses a fleet of iPads, iPhones, and Apple TVs to aid in the production process. Employees at the farm emphasized the role of older equipment such as the Apple PowerBook.

Ben Burtt, sound designer for the original Star Wars trilogy, prequel trilogy, and the Indiana Jones franchise, said his journey began with the Macintosh SE, urging young people who want to work with sounds in movies to start composing the sound of their effects suite using “inexpensive apps that you can access Now on your iPad‌ or MacBook, so you can really do all kinds of cutting and audio mixing at home.”

Sound editor and sound designer Al Nelson said the iPhone recordings are “completely usable” in a professional context. Seven-time Academy Award-winning sound designer Gary Rydstrom explained:

You can tell a lot of the story with audio in a way that is less expensive than visuals, usually, and sometimes even more emotionally. If you are interested in audio or movie making, you can record 4K+ video on your iPhone. There is no excuse. The things that are part of our daily lives are the same things that you need to record audio and make movies. This is the real revolution. In the end, it will democratize the whole process.

See Apple’s full press release for more information on how Skywalker Sound created its famous cinematic soundtrack.

On Monday, May 9, 2022, Apple will host a unique Today at Apple online session with Leff Lefferts of Skywalker Sound and Eddie Francis of Apple Music, featuring footage from Skywalker Ranch and the opportunity to learn from Apple Creative Pro how to make sound effects for a character using their voice and Everyday Objects and GarageBand. Participants can register at apple.co/skywalker-sound.
