Agent: Heard’s allegations of abuse ‘disastrous’ for Johnny Depp’s career

Johnny Depp’s case entered into a $50 million defamation lawsuit against his ex-wife, Amber Heard, on the 12th Monday of her testimony in a Virginia courtroom, a day after news of Heard’s firing of a PR team.

Jurors were told that after Heard made allegations of domestic violence against Depp in 2016, his film career and earnings fell dramatically.

Depp’s agent, Jack Wigham, testified that in 2017, the actor produced three studio and two independent films for a fee of about $35 million, but in 2018 he produced only two independent films for a fee of $4 million.

For one of those films, Minamata, Wigam said, funding became “shaky” and Depp had to forgo his fees to “save the film.”

Wigham said Disney, who had identified Depp in the sixth installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean series, “was going in a different direction.” Depp, who was to be paid $23 million plus a share of the profits, was to be replaced by Margot Robbie.

“I didn’t manage to save the pirates for Johnny,” Wigham said.

“After the opening streak, it was impossible to get a studio film for him,” Wigham said, referring to a Washington Post article at the center of the defamation case, in which Heard said she had survived domestic and sexual abuse.

“As far as Johnny, it was disastrous,” Wigham said.

Under questioning, Wigham said the article became “a death knell, a disastrous thing for Mr. Depp in the Hollywood community”. He said Depp hasn’t made a movie since July 2020.

Richard Marks, a deal-maker in the film industry whose job, he said, is to help clients “get to yes” and into a successful contract, said Heard’s allegations against Depp ultimately created a “cancellation situation” for Depp.

Marks said the studios have always put up with a special demeanor from their stars.

“Johnny Depp is known to be Johnny Depp. When you hire Johnny Depp you get all of Johnny Depp — and that includes delay.” He said that Hollywood “only deals with divas and drugs when it comes to money, and big stars and art are involved.”

But Heard’s accusations left him virtually unemployed. “In the past five years, especially with the #MeToo movement, you wouldn’t want to hire an actor who has been ‘cancelled.’ Right now, the height of negativity in Hollywood is being accused of domestic or sexual abuse,” Marks said.

“You wouldn’t want to pay to hire a representative followed by the negative. You wouldn’t want to pay to lower your brand.”

Earlier, the court was also shown testimony from Travis McGovern, a member of Depp’s security team who often worked the night shift.

The choreography of controversies at Depp and Heard’s five-penthouse complex in Los Angeles is once again in the spotlight, with McGovern testifying that he saw Heard punch Depp in the face after he and Depp’s nurse were called at 4 a.m. one April 2016 day.

McGovern said Heard threw a can of Red Bull at Level Two Depp, hitting him in the back.

“She threw a bag or briefcase, I spit on him, a lot of vitriol,” McGovern said.

“Usually, Mrs. Heard would direct her feelings to Mr. Depp,” he added, with the frequency of the controversy increasing to “several times a week.”

McGovern said Depp never responded physically. With the verbal insults continuing, he said, Depp “gave as much as he got.”

He said the abuse could include “anything and everything…the f-word is my favorite word but it’s been thrown around to the point where I feel uncomfortable.”

On the night in question, McGovern said, Heard left and came back with her sister Whitney, while he was trying to get Depp out. By then, he said, Depp threw shelves of Heard’s clothes and accessories from a third-floor balcony.

McGovern said both Heard and Depp were “disturbed.” He said Depp usually takes framed letters from Hunter S Thompson or Marlon Brando before returning to his home in North Sweetzer, which was owned by Bela Lugosi.

McGovern said he was standing between Depp and Heard when “in the corner of my eye, I saw a fist and an arm coming across my right shoulder. I heard and saw a closed fist connecting to Mr. Depp on the left side of his face.”

McGovern testified that Heard had thrown the punch and that Depp was feeling “shocked” in the face. He said the actor had a “cute little sparkle”.

Depp’s lawyers will end their offer on Tuesday. On Wednesday, it is believed that Heard will take a stand in her defense of Depp’s $50 million defamation lawsuit, and face a $100 million claim of her own, as a nuisance.

On Sunday, it was reported that Heard fired her team at Precision Strategies. It has reportedly hired another company, Shin Communications. A source told the New York Post about the switch While another said Aquaman The actress was “frustrated that her story was not being effectively told”.
