watchOS 8.5 Breaks Fast Charging Apple Watch Series 7

Apple released watchOS 8.5 for the Apple Watch last week, and while it came with some new features, it also seems to have broken one feature exclusive to the Apple Watch Series 7. According to Apple Watch Series 7 users, it’s confirmed 9to5MacWatchOS 8.5 appears to be breaking support for fast charging…

Apple Watch fast charging problems

One of the features of the Apple Watch Series 7 is support for faster charging times. Apple says that with fast charging, the Apple Watch Series 7 battery level can rise from 0-80% in about 45 minutes. Although Apple Watch Series 7 fast charging is supported, Apple does not include the necessary USB-C power adapter in the box.

You can purchase any power adapter that supports 5W USB power delivery or better to achieve fast charging capabilities with your Apple Watch Series 7. One of the most popular options that have emerged is the BoostCharge Pro 3-in-1 Wireless Charging Pad with MagSafe. When I reviewed the Belkin 3-in-1 charger last year, I praised its versatile design and support for Apple Watch fast charging and 15W iPhone charging.

However, with watchOS 8.5, something changed and the Apple Watch Series 7 fast charging no longer worked. A number of affected Apple Watch Series 7 users have taken to the Apple support forums and Reddit to share their experiences since the update to watchOS 8.5. 9to5Mac Also confirm this issue.

While this issue initially appeared to only affect users with the Apple Series 7 and Belkin BoostCharge Pro, it actually appears to be affecting users with Apple Series 7 and Belkin BoostCharge Pro. everyone Fast charging for users. This includes those who use Apple’s USB-C Magnetic Fast Charging Cable.

One user explains:

Since updating to 8.5, my 6 series only charges about 49% overnight. Tried stopping and restarting. I do not go. Hope the update comes. So frustrated.

another says:

For me fast charging works after update after several attempts. The first try always fails (2% in 15 minutes), but removing the charger and plugging it in again will start fast charging. Unfortunately, you can’t directly tell if it’s working or not and you have to wait for a few minutes (battery condition is different -> working, battery condition is the same -> retry).

And finally:

Well my post seems to be charging half the speed it was before the update, maybe‚Ķ the night before the update I got 40% in 15 minutes, 20%-60% and then 90% in another 15 minutes. After updating to 8.5 I got 40% in about 30 minutes 52%-92%. But maybe it’s slowed down because it’s at the higher end of charging? I think I should have turned it on at 20%. Seems to be shipping very quickly. I mean it’s not acceptable though. Did you restart the watch and try it again

In fact, one user claims that Belkin’s BoostCharge Pro 3-in-1 is no longer able to charge the Apple Watch at all due to watchOS 8.5:

I can also confirm that the Enhanced Pro has stopped charging the Series 7 completely after updating to watchOS 8.5. It will charge normally on Apple chargers, but the recently released Belkin fast charger no longer works. Given the utter desertion landscape that a third party is rapidly shipping the Series 7 currently, how quickly Apple can release a fix for this is critical to Belkin and others to maintaining customer trust.

We’ve reached out to Apple and Belkin for comment on this issue and will update if we hear back. In the meantime, let us know if you’ve been having issues with fast charging of your Apple Watch Series 7 since updating to watchOS 8.5.
