A new book that claims to reveal the details of life behind the palace walls contains countless shocking allegations about the Queen and the rest of the royal family.
Tina Brown’s The Palace Papers, which will hit shelves next week, took two years to prepare and includes interviews and information from more than 120 insiders and sources.
Covering everything from Prince Charles’ unusual bathroom demands and requests for his settlement, to an insight into the Duchess of Cambridge’s difficult relationship with sister-in-law Meghan Markle.
Prior to its publication on May 3, excerpts from the palace papers were published in the Daily Mail.
We’re looking at some of the most shocking claims we know so far, and it’s fair to say that Brown isn’t holding back…
Kate’s Secret Life
According to Brown, Kate ensures she keeps up with her interests and passions away from the royal spotlight and makes secret visits to galleries and museums to “nourish her inner life”.
She was once seen sneaking into the Hockney Gallery at the Royal Academy at 8 am, and seated in front of one of the fine art pieces.
She told the man she was sitting next to, “I miss art history. That’s what I do to get my fix.”
The Duchess of Cambridge earned a 2:1 degree in art history when she graduated from the University of St Andrews in 2005.
Charles is “very needy” for the Queen
Brown claims that Charles is “desperate” with his mother’s approval, but notes that they are two completely different people.
A source told her he was “the wrong kind of person” for her, thinking he was too needy, emotional, and vulnerable.
And they continued: “Arts, charitable causes not shrouded in a strict sense of duty – all this is anathema to her.”
The insider also claims that Philip also had fears that his son would become king, having reportedly said he did not believe Charles was the “physical king”.

‘Silent Discomfort’ by Kate and William after Meghan’s speech
There was a great deal of excitement when Meghan, Kate, William and Harry performed their first joint engagement, and it didn’t take long for them to be dubbed the “Fab Four.”
However, Brown claims that while things looked great to outsiders, those behind the scenes saw a different story.
Kate, Harry and William founded the mental health organization Heads Together, but when Meghan joined the project, her excellent public speaking abilities meant she was able to get the message across clearly.
“Harry looked on in awe and his brother and Kate stood aside in blunt anger,” Brown writes.
“When it came time for Kate to speak, she was strikingly less clear, as well as brief.”
Megan’s publicity message
Brown claims Meghan loved the freebie, using her pre-royal celebrity status to get gifts from designer brands. This isn’t unusual in the celebrity world, but Brown claims she sent a PR letter after her marriage to The Firm.
The author wrote that Megan “has built a reputation among luxury brand marketers for her keen interest in receiving swag from designer bags.”
Adding that after her wedding in 2018, a member of Meghan’s new team wrote to a publicist to say: “Make sure you [the publicist] You know she can still send anything to me.
“She’s always been one of the good guys.”
According to Brown, the rumored rift with the Queen’s assistant and good friend Angela Kelly came about because Meghan “didn’t realize the difference between the Queen’s personal assistant and contract designer at NBC Universal”.
There have been countless reports of controversy over Meghan’s wedding day crown, with Harry reportedly saying “what Meghan wants, Meghan getting” after she was refused permission to wear her first choice.
A source told Brown that there was “a lot of anger” in the lead-up to their 2018 wedding and that Meghan was screaming in front of staff.
An insider told her that Meghan and Harry share a common addiction to drama, which has led to such repercussions.
Charles’ unbelievable travel demands
The Prince of Wales’ strict standards and taste for the finer things in life have already been reported, but Brown makes new startling claims in her book.
It details how Prince Charles allegedly sent a truck with his belongings to his friends’ country homes the day before his stay to unload his “bed, furniture and even pictures”.
This includes his orthopedic bed, toilet seat and Kleenex Velvet toilet paper.
She also claims that Charles brings his own landscapes of the Scottish Highlands to decorate his room.
Harry sent a gift for his 30th birthday from Charles
The author writes that Prince Harry’s relationship with Prince Charles has been strained for some time with them communicating primarily through their private offices.
The details of their awkward connection are best summed up in a conversation regarding Harry’s 30th birthday gift.
“Would you like another dinner jacket?” Presumably Charles asked, and Harry replied, “Okay.”
“So the guy from Savile Row came to measure it and when the suit arrived…one arm was shorter than the other and one leg shorter than the other, so it was…returned in a box, which looked kind of similar to their whole relationship,” Brown said.
Harry ‘upset’ his wife Camilla for changing bedroom
Much has been said about Prince Harry’s strained relationship with the Duchess of Cornwall in the past and other claims in Brown’s book seem to confirm it.
Harry is said to have “resented” Camilla and found it especially difficult when she changed his old bedroom in Highgrove House in Gloucestershire into her dressing room.
The author goes back to the time Princes William and Harry finally relented and met Camilla and reveals that Harry “raised her nerves with long silences and smoldering looks”.
She adds that Prince William was kept “under guard”, while his brother was “totally sullen”.
